The Walker-Gamble School was established in 1953 as a segregated school for African American children. Located in eastern Clarendon County, South Carolina, the school offered grades 1st through 12th grades until 1970. The Walker-Gamble School was one of several public schools for African Americans funded through a special tax initiative under the leadership of Governor James Byrnes in an effort to equalize public education in South Carolina prior to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education. The book chronicles the history of Walker-Gamble which emerged from the Black rural community schools in New Zion, Sardinia, Gable and Turbeville, through the struggle for school integration of Clarendon County School District #3.
