“The silver artificial Christmas tree stood before the big picture window in our living room draped in sparkling tinsel with bright red ornament balls. Occasionally, there might be other decorations added to the tree; however, the bright little tree was simple, an appropriate description of life in New Zion.  Despite the gripping cold weather of late December in New Zion, the Christmas season was filled with warmth, joy, and cheer.  It was a time of family, food and fun”.  Living and Dreaming Down South captures the poignant memories of an African American child who came of age in New Zion, during the 1960’s, one of the most dynamic and riveting periods in American history.  In a series of short essays, the author revisits family holiday traditions, summertime activities, farm life, and special occasions that shaped a life within a rural farming community in the south.  Coming fall 2025.
